The Location
Evanston is located immediately north of Chicago along the shores of Lake Michigan. Organized in 1857, Evanston is named after John Evans, one of the founders of Northwestern University. Since that time, residents of Evanston have enjoyed the natural beauty of its location, its fine shopping and dining, its many recreational and cultural opportunities, and its close proximity to the Lake, downtown Chicago and public transportation.
The city of Evanston has an identity distinct from Chicago and its other suburbs. In many ways it rivals Chicago, including its diverse collection of restaurants. With more than 100 to choose from, residents can find a restaurant to suit every cuisine and budget. Equally numerous and diverse are the city's shops and boutiques, located in downtown Evanston as well as the commercial districts along Central, Dempster and Main Streets.
Recreational activities abound, many of which focus on the city's greatest natural resource, the lake. The city has nearly ninety parks, six public beaches, a public golf course and several playing fields. Most are connected by a bike path and fitness trail. You can also bike the paths of the Ladd Arboretum or take in the dozens of rose varieties at the Merrick Rose Garden.
Evanston and Northwestern offer a myriad of cultural opportunities, including concert and theater performances, museums and art galleries, numerous libraries and book stores, as well as access to adult education offerings through the university.
Downtown Chicago and neighborhoods surrounding Evanston are easily accessible by car, CTA bus and rail service, PACE suburban bus service, and Lake Shore Drive and Expressways.
The Property
Majestically situated on exclusive Sheridan Place in the Northeast Evanston Historic District, the Edward Kirk Warren house is an extraordinary limestone mansion dating back to 1911. Designed by noted architect William Carbys Zimmerman, the residence blends Prairie School design details such as clean interior and exterior lines, grouped windows, carved woods and stained glass, with the grandeur of the finest Victorian architecture. In many ways it is a Prairie School castle. The residence was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Magnificent original features include carved limestone decorative elements on the exterior and an interior resplendent with oak flooring, spectacular millwork, vaulted ceilings, and stained and leaded glass windows. The entry features a grand staircase in darkened oak with oak wainscoting and a massive carved banister. A powder room with original tile work is tucked under the stairs. To the south is a "ladies parlor" with a beautiful plaster frieze, birch wainscoting, an Art Nouveau chandelier and leaded stained glass windows, and French doors leading to the living room. A regal space in size and feel, the formal living room features mahogany wainscoting and built-in bookshelves, stained glass heraldry windows overlooking the stone terrace, as well as a large fireplace with limestone mantel and ceiling-high flue. Two sets of French doors lead out to the terrace, and a decorative honeycomb pattern adorns the vaulted ceiling.
On opposite sides of the living room are the solarium and formal dining room. The light-filled solarium features tile floors, birch trim, and lake views. With oak paneled walls, imposing oak doors, and a decorative plaster frieze, the dining room is grand and bright. Stained glass windows bathe the room in light, and a breakfast porch in glazed yellow brick is accessed through French doors nearby. The home's original kitchen, butler's pantry, and informal breakfast room provide a spacious area ripe with potential. Completing this level are a second entrance, back stair, and the original servants' quarters, including two bedrooms, a full bath, and a kitchen.
A generously-sized landing introduces the second level of the home, which offers abundant birch millwork and oak hardwood flooring throughout. The master suite is comprised of his-and-hers bedrooms connected by a full bath. Nearby is a stunning library with beautiful wood-paneled walls extending nearly floor-to-ceiling, extensive dentil molding, a stained glass ceiling panel and a limestone fireplace. Three additional bedrooms with en-suite baths, as well as plentiful storage space, complete this floor.
This spacious residence offers a third level comprised of a grand ballroom, two smaller rooms ideal for office space or storage, plus the home's octagonal tower room. Refinished hardwood floors and beautiful trim are found throughout this level. The home also has an original elevator, a large unfinished basement, and an attached two-car garage.
The expansive grounds include a large front yard with a circular drive and mature trees, as well as a traditional stone terrace in the back. This North Shore property offers a rare opportunity to add modern conveniences while restoring a historically and architecturally significant home to its original grandeur.
